What is Acupuncture?

The Benefits of Acupuncture on Migraines

Acupuncture is a medical technique that originates from China. Acupuncture dates back over 5000 years. Thin needles about the size of your hair, are placed in specific areas of the body known as pressure points. Acupuncture has with stood the test of time and passed down for generations in China. Acupuncture has mixed research from the medical community. There are studies that show both sham acupuncture and real acupuncture work the same, however, they both out perform the standard of care, drugs, in these studies.  Other studies indicate that acupuncture can provide relief of chronic headaches. Since 1979, acupuncture has been endorsed by the World Health Organization as a solution for pain treatment.

How Acupuncture Works on Migraines

Acupuncture works to restore the flow of energy and blood within the body, in this process, healing is triggered. In acupuncture, the body is divided into different energy meridians that correlate with each organ. Along the meridians are pressure points where needles are inserted. The insertion of needles is dependent on the symptoms you are having, as they are placed along different meridians according to the symptoms. Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and many pressure points are close to the nerves but the needles are not placed in the nerves. The needles stimulate the secretion of endorphins which trigger a systemic response for pain relief and increased circulation. The energy meridians and acupuncture points stimulate the vascular system, immune system, and nervous system to facilitate healing and help relieve migraines.

Should You Try Using Acupuncture?

There is little risk associated with acupuncture, especially when a licensed acupuncturist is the one administering the treatment. Occasionally fatigue, mild bruising at needle site, or soreness may be felt after the appointment is done, primarily only after the first treatment. The National Centers for Complementary & Integrative Health has indicated that acupuncture that is administered using dirty equipment can be a risk to your health. This is of no concern because all the needles used are surgical grade stainless steel and are recycled after single use. The FDA considers the acupuncture needles as a single-use equipment. As you undertake the procedure, ensure that you see the needles being used are new and sterile. Always ask questions about the procedure. A qualified acupuncturist will always walk you through the process to keep you calm and safe. Acupuncture may not be considered as the only treatment to treat your migraines. Sometimes it may require a visit with a Western Biomedical Doctor or a Doctor of Chiropractic.

When to Visit a Doctor

Do not treat certain headaches with acupuncture. Speak to your doctor first before you consider acupuncture, especially if you are experiencing nausea, dizziness, and loss of vision. If you have headaches that keep getting worse, you need to go for a medical examination. Some headaches are caused by an allergic reaction or a spike in blood pressure which needs a diagnosis. When you visit your doctor, always mention the alternative treatment you are undertaking.
